City Recreation Director Mark Nix gave an extended update Oct. 28 on Mission Viejo’s sports and events tourism efforts tied to the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic movement. Staff said the city secured multi‑year training agreements with The Netherlands (2026–28), USA Diving, and visiting teams from France and Australia; Canada signed on the morning of the meeting.
Nix described outreach to community partners — Lake Mission Viejo Association, Saddleback College, local hotels, the Chamber of Commerce and the Orange County Sports Commission — and said early visits from foreign teams generated immediate economic activity. He reported the city made a recurring investment of $100,000 per year for the effort and that about $194,000 has been spent over the last two and a half years to support tours, facility coordination and outreach. Nix said fundraising has netted just over $30,000 so far and staff anticipates additional revenue through ticketed fan‑zone events, sponsorships and merchandise.
Council members asked about impacts on local user groups and scheduling; Nix said staff plans to shift and accommodate existing programs where possible and emphasized the goal is not to displace regular users. He also described legacy projects (examples from other pre‑games hosts) that could create lasting community benefits. The council encouraged volunteer and sponsorship ideas and directed staff to continue permitting and partner coordination work.
