The Mission Viejo City Council meeting included a presentation by Friends of the Library President Pam Smith and Library Director Genesis Hansen, in which Smith presented a $165,000 check to the library and described the volunteers and fundraising operations that support library services.
Pam Smith said the Friends group manages donated books, DVDs and other media, operates a bookstore and an Amazon sales division, and holds multiple fundraisers (two multi‑day book sales and an annual "Pursepalooza"). Smith said the group receives about 10,000 donated items per month, has approximately 77 volunteers and estimated volunteer hours of about 10,000—equivalent to roughly five full‑time employees at an estimated value of $400,000. Hansen said Friends have raised over $3.5 million since the library opened and described how annual donations support new print and digital collections and public programs.
The council accepted the check in a ceremonial presentation and thanked the Friends volunteers for ongoing support.
