Linn County sets plumbing, mechanical and electrical code hearings, approves first reading of electrical changes, appoints Nancy Cleary and moves to closed door

At a regular meeting, the Linn County Board of Supervisors set a public hearing for Oct. 27, 2025 at 10 a.m. on proposed plumbing-code amendments (Chapter 105, Article 5) and opened hearings on mechanical and electrical code updates that align county rules with newer state and model-code versions.
Linn County building official Luke Maloney explained the mechanical-code item updates the county from the 2021 IMC to the 2024 version "to keep us in line with state requirements," and said both the mechanical and plumbing boards recommended the changes and were merged into a single plumbing-and-mechanical board to address quorum issues. On the electrical ordinance, Maloney described the change as "more of an administrative cleanup" requested by the state electrical bureau and said it does not change substantive requirements.
The board also took routine actions: it approved claims totaling $2,368,950.28 and payroll authorizations by voice vote, and moved to appoint Nancy Cleary to the Linn County Child and Youth Development Services Advisory Committee for a term expiring June 30, 2027. A supervisor praised Cleary's decades of service to the county during the appointment discussion.
Toward the end of the session the board moved to enter a closed session under Iowa Code §21.5(a) to discuss two draft ordinances that the board said are confidential records under Iowa Code §22.7(65). A roll-call was taken and the board voted to proceed into closed session.
No substantive public opposition or additional public comment was recorded for the code amendments or ordinances during the hearings.
The meeting record shows several small publication and scheduling issues were raised (a department will "clean that up moving forward," Maloney said), and the board asked auditor and staff to ensure future public-notice postings are correct.
