Treasurer Brent Olsen told the board his office completed a hire for a new universal clerk pending drug testing and background checks with a tentative start date of Nov. 24. He also raised facility maintenance concerns: "$50,000 a gate, essentially, even if I did all 3 of them..." Olsen said, describing the cost to replace gates that were installed without accessible service panels.
Olsen said his staff has increased safety through cameras and procedural controls and that sheriff's deputies are present regularly. For now, he recommended a short-term approach rather than an immediate, disruptive renovation that would require removing walls and creating access panels.
He also described an influx of construction workers associated with data-center projects, an uptick in motor-vehicle transactions from other counties and a rise in customers whose primary language is Spanish. Olsen emphasized the office's stance against profiling and said staff training and procedural safeguards are in place. He suggested contract negotiators consider extra compensation for employees who regularly provide bilingual translation for complex transactions.
Board members asked for ongoing updates, suggested adding gate replacement planning to CIP discussions and thanked Olsen for bringing options rather than an immediate spending request. No vote on capital expenditures occurred during this session.
