Cerritos council approves study of a 5K run/walk for 2026 Spring Fling

The City Council voted Oct. 13 to direct staff to study the feasibility of hosting a 5K run/walk as part of the 2026 Spring Fling and report back with details. The Parks and Recreation Commission had unanimously requested the study; staff estimated a preliminary cost of about $14,000 and noted the adopted FY 2025-26 budget does not include funds for the event.
Acting recreation superintendent Samir Patel said the estimate excludes potential costs for street closures and additional insurance or Los Angeles County Sheriff's deployment, which would significantly increase the expense. Council members discussed participant fees, sponsorship and routing options intended to reduce costs and minimize disruption.
Council Member Jennifer Hong said the city recently finalized its budget and preferred considering the idea for next year if funding could be secured; other council members suggested sponsors, partnerships with local schools or using existing park/school routes to avoid street closures.
Council Member Sei moved to approve the staff recommendation to plan the 5K and have staff present detailed logistics and cost estimates; the motion passed 4 to 1.
