Groundswell honors City of Tustin for inclusion work

Gurpreet Ahuja, a member of Groundswell's board and a pediatric head and neck surgeon, presented a Groundswell Community Certificate to Mayor Pro Tem Nielsen and thanked the City of Tustin for its participation in countywide inclusion efforts.
"We are Groundswell, a non profit organization that supports your efforts towards creating inclusion and safety," Ahuja said, outlining Groundswell's Orange County Together training on civil-rights history, implicit-bias and conflict resolution. He cited recent county-level economic figures to underscore the importance of sustaining an inclusive community.
Ahuja said Groundswell has trained nearly 2,200 participants in 91 work groups and provides mediation services and early-intervention housing-related mediation to partner cities. He described the group's work responding to hate crimes and promoting civil discourse and praised the city for its membership and financial support of the program.
Council members thanked Ahuja and staff and posed for a recognition photo following the brief presentation. The acknowledgment did not include any formal council action.
The presentation was one of several ceremonial items on the agenda and was followed by public comment and regular business.
