Sheriff reports two fatalities in early-morning Callahan County house fire; jail population and overtime figures reviewed

Sheriff Mel told the Callahan County Commissioners on Nov. 12 that a house fire on 880 North this morning consumed the home and resulted in two fatalities, a man and a woman. The fire marshal and emergency personnel remained on the scene as the court met, the sheriff said.
"The house was totally consumed before anybody called it in," Sheriff Mel said, adding that the initial 911 call arrived about 7:00 a.m. He said the county will likely have more information as the fire marshal completes its investigation.
During the same report, Sheriff Mel provided jail-population and overtime figures. He said the county held 21 inmates across Callahan and neighboring counties (Callahan, Collin, Shackleford and Taylor), and clarified that locally the facility held six men and one woman. For recent pay periods he reported dispatch overtime of 12 hours (for one pay period) and 7.75 hours (for the Nov. 12 period), and deputy overtime of 3.25 hours in one pay period and none in the most recent period.
The court moved to accept the sheriff's report. Commissioner Clark moved to accept; Commissioner McGowan seconded, and the motion carried with no recorded opposition.
The sheriff did not provide names of the fire victims at the meeting, and the court did not take further action beyond accepting the report. Officials said they expect follow-up information from the fire marshal and will report it when available.
