City reviews $6 million Phase 1 of 20‑year Morningside Nature Center master plan

Consultants emphasized the park’s role as a close‑to‑home natural resource for East Gainesville neighborhoods and prioritized accessibility and education.
Staff proposed a Phase 1 package budgeted at roughly $6,000,000 (to be drawn from FY25 and FY26 Wild Spaces allocations) that would cover site work, utility connections (including sewer), resurfacing and the new nature center building, with design/permitting and construction scheduled over 16 and 15 months respectively. Parks leadership said Phase 1 is intended to get key site infrastructure in place and to prepare for a Natural Resources Education and Training Center in a later phase.
Commissioners pressed staff on long‑term maintenance costs, staffing impacts, the project’s place among other Wild Spaces commitments and phasing choices. Several commissioners asked that the item return to a General Policy Committee or special meeting for a focused discussion of the full Wild Spaces project list and capital priorities before committing the full Phase 1 appropriation.
Next steps: staff will return with more detailed cost breakdowns and a recommended sequencing in a GPC or special meeting; grant applications and other supplemental funding options are being explored to offset construction costs.
