Parks staff reports progress on Direction 25 projects; Fricker Center nears 100% design and Roger Scott pool restroom has long lead time

Parks staff told the Pensacola Parks and Recreation Board on Oct. 21 that work funded under Direction 25 is progressing, with several spring projects finished and others moving into construction.
Assistant Director Tonya Bird said the department completed many sidewalk and playground projects earlier in the year; some items remain in progress, such as shade structures at the Roger Scott Tennis Center and stormwater drainage work at the Woodland Heights Resource Center. "We do have a couple of ideas of how we can add about probably 14 parking spaces," Bird said when asked about Woodland parking.
Bill Kimball gave a photo-driven overview of completed items including playground surfacing and McGee Field renovations. He said the planned shade structures for the tennis center are scheduled to be installed in November and estimated the cost for the identified shades at about $67,000.
On larger facilities, Bird said Fricker Center is approaching 100% design and the architects are exploring adding roughly 2,500 square feet; staff expect to have revised options within a week of the meeting. On Roger Scott pool, staff selected a prefabricated restroom building but warned it carries a long lead time. "We do have a 9 to 10 month lead time on that," Bird said, and noted that the Florida Department of Health will not allow use of a temporary restroom if the permanent restroom is not installed.
Staff also noted an unfunded project list will be circulated with next month's Direction 25 update so neighborhood associations can track projects not yet funded. Bird invited board members and the public to upcoming design meetings, including a Hollis T. Williams final design meeting and a public listening session for Bay Bluffs Preserve.
What's next: Staff will share the unfunded list in the next update, continue work on the Roger Scott and Fricker projects and pursue design options and cost estimates for several smaller items.
