Homestead council approves resolution asking USPS for city-only ZIP codes

The Homestead Committee of the Whole on Nov. 12 approved a resolution petitioning the United States Postal Service to establish unique ZIP codes assigned exclusively to the City of Homestead.
Mayor Lawson said the effort is aimed at clarifying identity and improving demographic and crime statistics. ‘‘Either you're in Homestead or you're not,’’ the mayor said, arguing that unique ZIP codes would reduce confusion in reporting and strengthen the city's branding efforts.
The staff resolution (App No. 3) was presented to the council as a step to begin the process with the Postal Service. City staff noted other municipalities have completed similar processes but that implementation typically takes several years.
Councilor Ross moved the resolution and Councilwoman Avila seconded. The motion passed on an affirmative voice vote.
Next steps: staff will submit the resolution to the United States Postal Service and begin the formal petition process; city staff said the change, if approved by USPS, will be a multiyear transition.
