The Troutdale Parks Advisory Committee discussed renaming the tiny, neighborhood access site known as SP4 as part of planning tied to a long‑planned bridge across Beavercreek Canyon.
Staff said completing the bridge will create a much more connected trail network and bring more residents and visitors into the canyon, and suggested the SP4 designation—short for Sandy Palisades Phase 4—may no longer fit that role. "When that bridge is finally complete ... we'll have a much more connected trail system in Troutdale," staff said, urging the committee to consider a name with local or historical significance.
Residents and committee members responded with local history and practical cautions. "Up until about five years ago, there was a bridge there, and it did connect," member Sherry said, recalling the earlier crossing and why the current gap arose. Committee members noted the canyon has flood‑prone sections and steep switchbacks; in places the trail washes out and requires regular maintenance. One member suggested the site is more accurately described as a trailhead than a park, recommending a name such as "Beavercreek Canyon Trailhead."
Discussion covered access and parking. Staff noted the Sandy Palisades side lacks parking and that Weeden and Llewellyn parks offer closer vehicular access. Committee members pushed for preserving motorized maintenance access (gator or small side‑by‑side) to support upkeep and potential search‑and‑rescue needs.
On next steps, the committee favored direct neighborhood outreach—posting a notice on the site bulletin board, adding a QR code for suggestions, and soliciting input from nearby residents and local school groups—before making a formal recommendation to city council. Staff said they would attach a notice to the park bulletin board and collect names for possible suggestions ahead of the committee's next substantive discussion.
The committee took no formal vote on a new name; staff framed the item as an open‑ended discussion and asked members and neighbors to return suggestions at a future meeting.
