Donna Law and Kat Potter presented the Department of Cultural and Community Engagement's annual report and program highlights to the committee.
They said the department's budget is about $62.5 million (including legislative pass-through and federal funds) and described a county-level mapping of programs showing cultural, STEM, volunteer and historic-preservation activity across Utah. The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) was highlighted for reviewing roughly 2,000 federal or state undertakings annually in less than 10 days — well under the federal 30-day mandate — and for national recognition of the office's work.
The presenters summarized volunteerism initiatives (YouServe Utah and a service fellowship for college students), the STEM Action Center's work (hydroponics pilots in rural libraries and expansion into more schools), and the UMake maker network. They previewed America250 activities, traveling exhibits to all 29 counties and the Museum of Utah, which they said will open in June with about 1,000 artifacts in the initial showing and a Dusty Boots tour for legislators planned in late January/February.
Ending: Committee members thanked DCCE staff for outreach and program responsiveness; the department promised more event invitations and links to materials in the annual report.
