Mayor Hunt read a proclamation declaring November 2025 as Homelessness Awareness Month and urged community recognition of youth homelessness and coordinated responses. In the proclamation text the mayor referenced "the city of Orangeville" and called for local partners and businesses to support an equity‑driven continuum of care.
Following the mayor, a district McKinney‑Vento liaison explained that Dr. Emily Barber wrote and secured the McKinney‑Vento grant in 2024; that award covers three years and was described in the session as approximately $218,750 per year (the liaison read the annual award amount aloud). The liaison said services funded by the grant include a part‑time student liaison role, transportation support for students who move out of district boundaries, a vehicle equipped with a security camera for student transport, washer/dryer facilities for families, vouchers for groceries through a Save A Lot partnership, after‑school tutoring targeted to students experiencing homelessness, and referral and outreach work across schools.
The liaison described current counts of students being helped as "116 kids, and I added another little girl today," and later discussed district tallies by building (for example, she cited approximate counts at Crossroads, Owensville and the middle and high schools). The liaison said many families in the county are doubled up or living in substandard housing; the district emphasized confidential outreach to avoid stigmatizing families.
Board members and staff thanked the liaison and emphasized the importance of continuing outreach and monitoring the grant; the liaison said she and the newly added staff member, Sherry Kisic, currently operate part‑time so the district is trying to maximize services within grant constraints. The presentation closed with a request to maintain focus on identification and supports throughout the year.
Next steps: staff will continue program work and monitor the three‑year grant; the board did not take separate formal action during this portion of the meeting.
