Public commenters urge objective U.S. history instruction; city council liaison introduces role

Ali Pilcher introduced herself as the city council's board of education liaison and said she is excited to serve in the role. “I was a high school teacher...I sponsored the Student Government Association...I bring a different perspective and I'm really excited to work with all of you,” Pilcher said.
A second speaker, Pat Luis of 3048 Asbury Park Place, urged the board to teach United States history objectively and honestly rather than to promote patriotism. “I just hope that you'll keep in mind that the purpose of teaching United States history...is not to promote patriotism,” Luis said, adding that history instruction should not hide the country's imperfections.
Unidentified Speaker 1 reminded attendees of public comment rules (state name and address, three-minute limit) and noted the board does not typically respond to public participation during the meeting. No formal board response to Luis's policy suggestion was recorded on the transcript.
The meeting closed after brief announcements and congratulations to staff and students.
