Rutherford County commissioners voted to remove the Florence Singer property from public market listings so staff can complete a Brownfield environmental review, finalize a consolidated plat, and evaluate county reuse options.
Commissioner Harris outlined several potential county uses — a single-line recycling MRF in partnership with private operators, a possible TCAT training campus if the land were transferred, or retention for future county needs — and said the site could appreciate in value if redevelopment opportunities emerge. Harris urged caution about selling county land prematurely while environmental testing and planning remain incomplete.
Commissioner Johnson moved to take the parcel off the market for further investigation and to gather input from county departments and the mayor's office; Commissioner Hall seconded. Commissioners noted the parcel had been marketed as multiple parcels by the Chamber of Commerce rather than as a consolidated tract, and staff said the county is still awaiting a corrected plat to combine three parcels that make up the property. The motion passed on roll call.
Staff were instructed to contact the Chamber of Commerce to withdraw active marketing and to complete necessary plat and environmental actions so the committee can revisit disposition once the reviews are complete.
