Sheriff McKenna updated the Lapeer County Board of Commissioners on an officer-involved shooting in Elmont, saying Michigan State Police investigators and the prosecutor reviewed evidence and concluded the deputies' actions were justified. McKenna said both deputies were placed on administrative leave during the probe and have since been cleared and returned to duty.
Commissioners asked technical questions about evidence processing and whether body-worn cameras aided the investigation. The sheriff explained the state's crime lab resources (he referenced Bridgeport as a lab location), the practice of using out-of-area investigators for transparency, and praised body cameras as important prosecutorial tools: "99.9% of the time, it saves us... for prosecution, it's actually huge," he said.
Separately, the board approved a grant request and purchase of replacement ballistic vests and carriers totaling $24,630. The sheriff noted a federal vest grant covers 50% of the cost but that federal reimbursement requires purchase documentation and serial numbers before payment is processed the following cycle.
Next steps: Staff will complete purchase and submit documentation for federal reimbursement and continue to implement body-camera and evidence-processing procedures as described by the sheriff.
