Kent City Council honored Sue Nelson on the council dais and proclaimed Nov. 19, 2025, in her honor, recognizing her decades operating Sue Nelson Designs in downtown Kent.
Mayor Jack Amrein read the proclamation, detailing Nelson’s start with Jacobs Wallpaper and Paint in 1978, her purchase of the Klein Building in 1989 and the shop’s role in downtown retail, merchandising and mentoring Kent State University design students. The proclamation credited Nelson with employing dozens of people, supporting local craftspeople and enhancing community life.
Nelson spoke following the proclamation, thanking family and longtime supporters and saying, “I love this town. It’s an amazing town.” She told the council she and her family own the building and plan to remain downtown.
The proclamation was presented during the council’s opening ceremonies and followed by brief remarks from Nelson. No formal action or appropriation followed the recognition.
The council moved on to reports and other business after the presentation.
