The committee on Nov. 24 voted to forward to the full council a $50,000 state earmark to support upgrades at the Humboldt Court handball courts on Lawrence’s North Side. The council president and a recreation representative explained that the funds will reimburse some city expenditures already made (paving and sandblasting) and pay for remaining tasks including fence repair, painting and floor reconditioning to bring the court back into regular use.

Councilors described the courts as an affordable recreational resource and said the funding was promoted to the city by a state representative. The committee voted unanimously among members present to recommend the earmark to the full City Council.
