Mayor Stephen T. Nero read a proclamation declaring November 2025 as Dementia Friendly Awareness Month in Westmont, citing national statistics on Alzheimer's and dementia and the work of the village's Dementia Friendly Advisory Committee.
Mary Ferguson, chair of Dementia Friendly Westmont, spoke after the proclamation and outlined program growth over five years. She said monthly memory cafes average 16–18 attendees and that the program grew from 4 programs with 34 attendees in 2019 to 24 programs with 285 attendees this year. "We have had 81 programs with over 1,000 people coming," Ferguson said. She thanked volunteers and partners including the Westmont Library and Westmont Lions and said she plans to reach out to restaurants to expand the program's scope in 2026.
Ferguson described memory-café activities as focused on social connection and reminiscence and emphasized visibility and community inclusion for people living with dementia and their care partners. The board and attendees thanked the program volunteers and recognized the group's work.
