The Parks and Recreation Board discussed a preliminary proposal to pursue a “Bird City” designation for Farmers Branch and agreed to seek more information before deciding whether to apply. Speaker 1 introduced the packet and said the material was new to the board; Speaker 4 described the presentation as an initial overview and recommended further research and possible coordination with the sustainability committee.
Board members repeatedly asked how the city would benefit and who would carry out the application and maintenance work. Speaker 2 said, “I just what is a bird city program… how would Farmers Branch benefit?” and asked whether staff, a board member or a volunteer resident would lead the effort. Speaker 4 replied the application requires meeting specific criteria, could be intensive, and that a knowledgeable resident or city representative could be invited to present in January.
Members suggested contacting jurisdictions that already hold the designation — the packet noted Dallas is a Bird City and there are only a handful in Texas — to learn lessons on benefits and ongoing obligations. Speaker 4 offered to reach out to other cities and to coordinate with the sustainability committee on potential partnership. The board directed staff to add the Bird City topic to the January agenda and to invite a knowledgeable presenter if available.
Next steps: the board will receive follow-up information and, if possible, a guest presentation on the Bird City designation in January before deciding whether to pursue an application.
