District staff announced that the Hungry Hearts Foundation will match up to $100,000 in donations to the district’s angel fund, which helps families who fall into the eligibility “gap” (about 185%–210% of the federal poverty level) but do not qualify for federal free or reduced-price meals.
"They are willing to match up to $100,000 of donations that come in for our angel fund," Speaker 2 said, describing the third year of the matching program. Speaker 2 outlined examples of donations converted to meals — noting an elementary meal costs about $3.35 — and said the district accepts checks, cards, Venmo and PayPal, and will help donors who need assistance completing a gift.
Edison Middle School student council and counselors described the Drive Out Hunger food drive. A counseling secretary at Edison, Carly King, said the Edison backpack program provides ready-to-go bags students and families can access any day. Student council representatives described the competition format and reported totals: 13,995 food points, 1,331 items donated to Edison, 579 items donated to Feeding South Dakota, and $2,549 collected in cash.
Board members and attendees praised the students’ work and encouraged continuation of the program. The board acknowledged the good news before proceeding with business. No formal action was required beyond the recognition and continued donation guidance.
