The Rutherford County Public Safety Committee on Nov. 24 approved a $550,000 budget transfer to cover jail overtime and accepted an $11,525 training equipment grant from the Tennessee Corrections Institute.

Chief Smith told commissioners the $550,000 would be moved from guards’ salaries into the overtime line to cover vacant positions and Family and Medical Leave Act coverage. He also described the TCI grant as a no‑match award with a performance period running roughly from Dec. 1, 2025, through April 30, 2026, intended to buy CPR and AED training tools and related supplies and to be placed into jail law‑enforcement supplies.

The committee moved and approved both items. For the TCI grant, Chairman Reed called the roll; commissioners recorded affirmative responses and the motion passed. For the $550,000 transfer the committee likewise conducted a roll call and approved the amendment.

The items were presented as budget amendments in the sheriff’s financial packet. Chief Smith summarized the sheriff’s broader budget usage earlier in the meeting, noting line‑by‑line percentages for overtime, uniforms and other categories.

Next steps: The approved transfers will be reflected in the county’s amended fiscal records and the TCI grant acceptance will be processed by county finance and the sheriff’s office for procurement of the specified training equipment.
