Commissioners and residents urged county staff to assess and address local traffic-safety hazards after reports of dangerous conditions around a Bascom construction project and at a rural intersection.
An unidentified board member (Speaker 1) described the situation near Bascom and said the project’s traffic controls were inadequate and "it's dangerous enough I almost hit one of those people myself a couple of days ago." Speaker 3 said the county has "been very involved in it" and that the state is also involved; Speaker 3 added the contract is held by the City of Bascom.
Separately, Speaker 5 described repeated driver noncompliance at the Rachel Road and Smoky Road intersection, noting a blind spot and frequent failure to stop at the posted sign. "I think either speed bumps or flashing lights or make a 4 way stop, something needs to be done to that intersection before somebody gets hurt," Speaker 5 said, and asked staff (Jeffrey) to review the location and report back.
Staff (Speaker 4) acknowledged the request and said they would follow up with relevant staff (Miss Register and others) to put the matter on record and investigate potential remedies.
No formal action was taken at the meeting; commissioners asked staff to follow up and to report back at a later meeting.
