The Franklin City Community Development Authority approved a zoning compliance permit for AT Cabinetry LLC on Nov. 20, allowing the company to manufacture custom cabinetry and operate a showroom with retail sales at 5054–5056 West Ashland Way in the Franklin Business Park (Planned Development District No. 18). Assistant Planner Rose Melton recommended approval, and the authority adopted a resolution with minor technical edits to the draft.
Melton told the authority the planning department reviewed the proposal using American Planning Association–recommended criteria, evaluated surrounding land uses and the future land use map, and concluded the proposed manufacturing and retail uses are compatible. "For that reason, the planning department recommends that the zoning compliance permit be approved for the proposed manufacturing and retail sales with the standard conditions that are applied for other PDD 18 zoning compliances," Melton said.
City attorney Jesse A. Wasilowski explained why the item is before the CDA: PDD No. 18 (adopted in 1993) permits and excludes certain uses in industrial areas and requires CDA approval before retail uses may be permitted on specified sites. Wasilowski noted minor technical edits to the resolution on the record — including correcting the date formatting, deleting provision 6, and recording a city file stamp date of Sept. 25 — and read a motion to adopt the resolution with those technical changes.
Two applicant representatives introduced themselves for the record. Tarnish Shamali gave a name and address; applicant Ahmad Abdul Rahim described his custom-cabinet business and said he currently operates a shop in Oak Creek, Wisconsin and is looking to relocate to Franklin Business Park. When asked about timing, Abdul Rahim said, "We're looking to open within a month." Planning staff indicated the proposed uses align with the future land use designation and recommended the standard PDD-18 conditions be applied.
An unidentified member moved to approve the resolution and another member seconded. The CDA approved the motion by voice vote; the chair announced the motion passed, approving the zoning compliance permit for AT Cabinetry LLC. Members and staff welcomed the applicants to Franklin and expressed anticipation of the business opening.
