The council voted to authorize the city manager to submit a letter of intent for Carpinteria to participate in a county-led multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plan update.
Julissa Briones, the county program manager presenting the item, said the county is seeking grant funding (a $375,000 grant was mentioned) to cover the update and that participation by cities promotes consistent regional mitigation strategies and eligibility for FEMA funding. Briones told the council the county plan is updated every five years and the next cycle would require an update by February 2028 to remain in compliance.
Staff explained that if the county s grant is not awarded, Carpinteria s share of the cost could be roughly $25,000 depending on cost allocation among participating jurisdictions. The council moved and voted to authorize the manager to submit the letter of intent; the clerk recorded affirmative votes from the assembled members.
The motion was presented and passed. Staff said a return item to the council would be required before any city funds would be committed for the update process.
