The Prattville Historic Preservation Commission voted Oct. 23 to grant a certificate of appropriateness for a 12-by-12 porch awning at 100 Maple Street, the Masonic Lodge (Prattville Lodge No. 89). The petitioner presented drawings and photos showing a front porch covering and an emblem with gold and black coloring.
The chair noted that Richard Ferguson would recuse himself from deliberations on the item because of a family connection to the lodge, saying, "erring on the side of caution, is going to be recusing himself from the commission's activities regarding this." With the public hearing opened and no members of the public speaking, the commission closed the hearing and took a vote. The measure passed 5–0 with one recusal.
Commissioners described the proposed awning as "simple" and "elegant," and staff confirmed that the commission does not generally regulate color. There were no conditions placed on the certificate beyond the application materials as presented.
The commission moved on to other agenda items after the vote.
