The Seymour City Council on Nov. 20 tabled a specific‑use permit request for a tiny home at 1669 County Road 205 and approved a permit for a tiny home at 505 North Stratton with a variance for tie‑down requirements.
Staff said the CR 205 applicant described the unit as a temporary residence to allow time to sell her current house. As staff summarized the applicant’s letter of intent: "I want a tiny house for temporary purposes so I can sell my current house," and that she asked to occupy a container‑style unit while resolving her housing situation. Council members expressed concern about placing a residence near an already dilapidated structure and the importance of hearing directly from the applicant; a council motion to table the CR 205 request until the applicant can attend passed.
At 505 North Stratton, applicant Bobby Morrow told the council the unit is intended as "a small one‑bedroom efficiency apartment, for workers that are coming in and out of Seymour," and assured members it would be tidily installed and not hooked to utilities until approved. Council discussed anchoring and skirting methods — treating the unit similar to a mobile home with anchors and skirting — and noted several positive neighborhood responses in the packet. After discussion, council approved the permit with the requested tie‑down variance.
The council’s actions reflect a cautious approach to tiny‑home placements: they favored a site‑specific review when visual impact or an adjacent dilapidated structure raised concerns, and allowed a variance where the applicant demonstrated plans to anchor and underpin the unit. Both items will return to council if additional conditions or follow‑up are required.
