At the start of the meeting, the board moved the student presentation segment forward so students could return home earlier; Northeast sixth graders read "About Me" poems and described what they appreciate about themselves in a lesson framed around resisting negative social-media comparisons.
Teacher Kim Hessler introduced the classroom writing exercise and the students who read or were introduced included Brian Ocampo, Emmy Shanks, Addie Chandler, Alex Kilgore and Taylor Ruberson. Hessler said she has used The Best Part of Me book to prompt students to "pick the best part of themselves and write about it and share about it."
During public comments Mark Bassey, Director of District Athletics, announced the board-approved hire included in the consent agenda: Megan Mattingly will begin as Danville High School's athletic director on Dec. 8. Mattingly introduced herself at the microphone and thanked board members and administrators; she said the position "feels so good to be back" and referenced taking the role in honor of a late mentor, "Mr. Grinton." The hiring was included in the consent agenda the board had just approved earlier in the meeting.
Board members and the superintendent thanked the students, teachers and the new hire. No separate action was required beyond the consent-agenda approval.
