The Boyertown Area School District policy committee on an evening meeting reviewed proposed edits to policy 004.1, which governs the student representative to the school board. The superintendent explained the changes and thanked the student liaison, Missus Kratz, for her work with student representatives.
The committee proposed that two student representatives be recommended by an interview panel that includes administration, the student council adviser and current student reps and then be formally approved by the board of school directors. "They would officially take a motion or you would take a motion each year that each member would be officially approved," the superintendent said, describing the move from an informal appointment to a board approval process.
Members discussed the composition of the two representatives. The superintendent and staff said the practice has generally been to appoint one junior and one senior; the committee recommended adding explicit language limiting the pair to no more than one senior to preserve continuity. Staff reported the position was created around 2019–2020 and that outreach to potential candidates will begin in March with a target for board approval in May or June so new representatives can be introduced in September.
The committee also agreed to revise participation language to clarify that student representatives prepare a brief report in conjunction with the board representative and administration, rather than implying mandatory collaboration with student council in all cases. Staff said current practice is that students submit a report to the liaison ahead of the next board meeting.
Next steps: the committee directed staff to update the policy wording consistent with these clarifications and return the draft for a first read at a future legislative meeting.
