Roseville city councilors on Nov. 24 unanimously approved orders authorizing abatement of five private hydrants that failed inspection and were deemed inoperable — a public‑safety action staff said could materially slow fire response times if not addressed.
Public Works Director Jesse Fryhammer told council the private‑hydrant inspection program, created after a 2016 ordinance, covers about 425 hydrants and has reduced inoperable counts through inspections and repairs. Staff brought five remaining inoperable hydrants to council for abatement at these addresses: 1375 Commerce St; 1960 Twin Lakes Pkwy; 2597 Cleveland Ave; 1641 County Road B2; and 1885 County Road C. Fryhammer estimated abatement costs around $5,000 per hydrant (replacement or repairs) plus an abatement fee; the contractor work would be invoiced to the property owner and could be assessed to the property if unpaid.
Councilors framed the action as necessary for fire safety. Council authorized separate abatement motions for each property; all motions passed unanimously.
What’s next: Public Works staff will schedule and complete repairs or replacements, invoice property owners, and follow assessment procedures if invoices are not paid. Council asked staff to monitor maintenance and report back as necessary.
