The Springfield City Council voted Nov. 24 to grant a special permit for a lit accessory wall sign for Springfield Day Nursery, which operates as Square 1, at its location on North Side William Street / 947 Main Street.

Dawn DeStefano presented the sign package and said the sign replicates the organization's logo. Councilors and Leo Florian of the South End Citizens Council praised the new facility and the return of the daycare to the South End after recovery from the 2011 tornado.

Councilor Whitfield asked whether the new site will serve preschoolers; DeStefano said the building has seats for 80 preschoolers (ages about 2.9 through 6) and that infant and toddler care will continue at another Educare location on Hickory Street. Councilors offered congratulations and asked for tours once the site is fully open.

The council conducted a roll call and approved the accessory‑sign special permit; the clerk said the permit is approved and planning staff analysis will be incorporated into the finding.

What’s next: Square 1 will install the approved sign and continue with its program operations under applicable licensing and planning conditions.
