Principal Jamie Valentine presented a school spotlight on Jane Addams Middle School, outlining how site practices align to district goals — improving academic achievement, increasing access and equity, boosting family engagement and creating 21st‑century learning environments. She said the school’s tier‑1 instruction produced significant growth in student proficiency and noted the school was placed on an Educational Results Partnership honor roll of California schools.
Valentine described the ELD Trek program, which integrates STEM activities into English language development coursework to give students more opportunities to practice speaking, listening, reading and writing through engineering and coding tasks. A student, Natalie, demonstrated a small robot that uses a color sensor and motor, and described how the class ties science vocabulary to hands‑on work.
Valentine also introduced eighth‑grader Bridal Silva Flores, who spoke about his experience in the school’s music program and said he will be honored with an ACCET Every Student Succeeding award at El Camino College. Board members asked logistical questions (for example, the time of the winter concert) and praised teacher commitment, extended parent‑teacher meeting times and community engagement activities.
The presentation included teacher introductions and a summary of upcoming events (CV rush day, high school information night, winter concert and sixth‑grade musical). No formal action was taken on the spotlight.
