The Michigan City Parks and Recreation Board voted Wednesday to approve NEST Community Shelter's request to hold a Coldest Night of the Year 5K fundraiser in 2026.

Eric Williams presented on behalf of NEST, saying last year the event drew more than 120 walkers on 19 teams and organizers are optimistic the walk will grow. He said planners submitted a revised route that runs by the water and that staff are adding family-friendly activities; Williams noted concerns about winter weather and the route will be evaluated closer to the event.

A motion to approve the request passed by voice vote with no further conditions recorded in the transcript. Organizers said they hope the event will become a major fundraiser and community-building event for the shelter.
