The Des Moines Independent Community School District board voted unanimously Friday morning to waive attorney‑client privilege only as to a confidential investigation report into the district’s 2023 superintendent hiring process.
The motion, made by board member Miss Martirano and seconded by Miss Knox, specified that the waiver applies solely to the report prepared by Melissa Schilling of the Dickinson Bradshaw law firm and does not lift privilege for any other communications, other law firms, or underlying materials such as interview recordings or work product. The board’s roll‑call vote was recorded as 7 to 0 in favor.
The motion text said the limited waiver is "for the limited purpose of permitting its disclosure to key stakeholders and the public," while preserving attorney‑client privilege on other topics and for other counsel. Miss Martirano introduced the motion, saying the intent was to make the investigation report available to stakeholders and members of the public. Miss Knox seconded the motion.
Board members answered in roll call when Miss Rios called the vote; the presiding officer announced the measure passed unanimously. Earlier in the brief special meeting the board also approved the meeting agenda by roll call.
The chair announced the investigation report will be made available on the district’s website midmorning. The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 a.m.

The report named in the motion is by Melissa Schilling of the Dickinson Bradshaw law firm; the motion and vote were limited to that report and explicitly preserved privilege for other materials and counsel. The district identified the posting location as the DMPS website.
