Johnson County Public Works outlines snowplow controls and route-mapping for new roads

Johnson County Public Works staff on Wednesday demonstrated snow-clearing equipment and route-mapping procedures as crews prepare for the winter season. Phil ****, a Johnson County Public Works employee, said the session aimed to finalize plow setup and confirm routes for newly added roads.

The briefing focused on vehicle controls and mapping tools that staff will use when snow events begin. “This is all a new section with the warehousing,” Phil **** said, noting that a recently added road will be plowed for the first time this season. He said the run also served as training in learning new roads.

Phil ****, who said he has worked with the department “going on 9 years,” described the specific controls crews will use. He named separate joysticks for the wing plow, the snow plow and the dump bed, and highlighted other adjustable settings such as tailgates and lights that he said have made equipment “a lot more driver friendly.”

The presentation included a map-based demonstration of route planning. “This is 56 Highway up ahead of me,” Phil **** said, adding, “We can find ourself on the map and place where we're at, and then we can look and see where do we wanna head next.” He said the exercise was intended to identify the most efficient path for a given run; routes are reassigned each year and crews test runs to learn the county’s changing road network.
