Bradley County planning staff told the commission they will draft a zoning text amendment to regulate cryptocurrency and data mining operations and bring a resolution to the next meeting.
Bentley said he reviewed an example from another county and proposed placing Bitcoin and data mining in I‑1 and I‑2 industrial zones, adding, "we need to put these Bitcoin and data mining operations in the I 1 and I 2 industrial zones." He said he would put the language in a resolution for the next meeting and invited commissioners to send comments.
Commissioners and participants raised concerns about environmental impacts and strain on the electrical grid. One commissioner summarized a news article they planned to circulate, saying it highlighted "the waste and the mess about the waste, environmental impact, and all of that," and offered to share the article with staff. Another participant said several acres had already been sold in a nearby county for such operations and raised questions about TVA and large‑scale assignment limits; Bentley acknowledged the concerns and said staff would include the issue for further study.
No ordinance or resolution was adopted at this meeting; Bentley will prepare draft language and present it as a resolution at the next meeting for formal consideration.
