The Bruton City Council voted to join Escambia County in opposing a proposed change to how state shared sales-without-use-tax (SSUT) revenue is distributed among local governments, approving Resolution 25-11-24-2 during the meeting.
The mayor explained the SSUT revenues support the city's budget, estimating the city receives about $400,000 from those collections when online purchases are delivered by common carriers. The resolution signals the city's opposition to efforts by larger cities to seek a greater share of the pool, which speakers said is currently apportioned according to population under state rules.
Council members discussed the potential procedural consequence that the state could suspend SSUT distributions while a lawsuit is pending, which would pause payments to municipalities until the dispute is resolved. Council members noted the county commission had already passed a similar resolution opposing the change.
A motion to approve Resolution 25-11-24-2 was made, seconded and carried by the council. The resolution directs the city to align with the county position in opposing the proposed distribution changes and potential litigation or administrative actions at the state level.
