Pottawattamie County officials announced that the Wall That Heals, a 3/4‑scale replica from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation, will be displayed locally over Memorial Day weekend.
Kate Gerber, public relations and Wall That Heals outreach coordinator, told the board the county was selected after months of committee work and coordination with the veterans office. Gerber said the county was one of 31 sites chosen this tour year from 153 applications and that the display will include the replica wall, a mobile education center and a "local heroes" section honoring area service members.
Gerber said organizers will open a volunteer sign‑up and expect to need 200–300 volunteers to staff setup, the 24‑hour public display and tear‑down. The committee plans outreach to schools and community organizations to arrange tours and educational programming while the wall is on site.
David Hazelwood and other committee members present commended the selection and noted the museum‑style experience aims to give local residents who cannot travel to Washington, D.C., an opportunity for remembrance. Gerber said West Fair and local tourism partners are assisting with site preparations and logistics to ensure a safe display.
Organizers said a formal volunteer sign‑up page and further event details will be posted on the county and community websites; Gerber said she will return to the board once volunteer recruitment opens.
