Decatur officials formally installed Nathan Kyle Springer as the city's new fire chief at a public swearing-in ceremony attended by city leaders, firefighters and residents.
Mayor Kent Lawrence opened the ceremony and introduced Springer's appointment before Decatur Municipal Judge Tequisha Golston administered the oath. Springer recited the oath in full: "I, Nathan Kyle Springer, do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Alabama and faithfully discharge the duties of the office of fire chief of the City of Decatur according to the best of my ability." The mayor then congratulated Springer and invited attendees to a reception following the event.
Springer used his remarks to acknowledge family, faith leaders, mentors and colleagues and to set priorities for his tenure. He thanked his wife, Bethany Springer, and his children, and expressed gratitude to former Chief Tracy Thornton for "over 26 years of service," including "the last 5 serving as our fire chief." Springer told the audience the department will focus on "strategic planning," leadership growth and development, and ensuring personnel have "the tools, training, and direction needed to be safe, healthy, and successful." He said, "We will work with honor, pride, and integrity."
The ceremony also included customary elements: the pledge of allegiance, sung national anthem performed by Sophie Crowley (identified in the program as a senior at Decatur Heritage Christian Academy), an invocation from Minister Steve Smith of Bellheim Church of Christ, and a benediction closing the event. Mayor Lawrence noted a ceremonial pinning and badge presentation would follow, and invited attendees to a reception on the 7th Floor.
The swearing-in is a ceremonial confirmation of Springer's role as head of Decatur Fire Rescue; no votes or legislative actions were recorded during the event. Officials and speakers emphasized continuity and internal promotion: Mayor Lawrence said it was "a proud moment for our community" to promote someone from within the department.
The ceremony concluded with a final prayer and the reception for attendees. No implementation deadlines, budget changes or policy actions were announced at the event.
