At the start of public comment, Todd Meyer — a sixth‑grade teacher who said he has worked 23 years in Sac City and 13 years at Phoebe Hearst — told the board the removal and suspension of two long‑time teachers at Phoebe Hearst was handled poorly by the district and has deeply harmed the school community.
Meyer said more than 300 past, present and prospective students attended a rally and that on one occasion nearly 40% of students stayed home in protest. He disputed the severity of the conduct that prompted the personnel actions, calling the incident "just carpet" and saying the punishment did not fit the offense. Meyer said staff have been told not to speak with the suspended teachers and that communication from the district left families and staff in the dark.
"We feel completely and utterly abandoned despite everything," Meyer said, describing fear among staff of reprisal and pleading with the board to show the community it matters by bringing the teachers back. The speaker repeatedly emphasized the teachers’ long service and argued the community had demonstrated strong support for them.
The board received the public comment and proceeded with the published agenda. No formal board action on the Phoebe Hearst personnel matter was recorded on the meeting agenda for that night.
