The Sacramento City Unified School District board voted to renew the dependent charter for Bowling Green (Chacon) for a five‑year term after staff found no conditions requiring non‑renewal and cited academic improvements.
District staff placed Bowling Green in the middle renewal tier based on the most recent dashboard data, reporting status and change in ELA, math, English‑learner progress and suspension rates. Staff highlighted gains for student subgroups, including special education students, and said the school had one of the district’s highest attendance gains this year.
Principal Sylvia Torres and school leaders described plans to expand intervention blocks, strengthen designated and integrated ELD, partner with community organizations for tutoring, and extend instructional aid hours. Multiple students, parents and a teacher spoke in support of the school and its bilingual program, offering personal testimonials about the school’s impact.
Staff noted longer‑term fiscal concerns: Bowling Green has relied in part on one‑time funds and must continue solvency planning. The district said it is finalizing a dependent‑charter memorandum of understanding (MOU) focused primarily on services and costs and expected to present a near‑final draft within weeks.
Board member Kayatta moved to adopt staff findings and approve the five‑year renewal; the motion passed on the board’s roll call vote.
