Students from Madonna Middle School presented their year’s activities and requested a regular student voice on the RSU 40 board.
"I'm Elsie Saranac," the student presenter said, and she described new schedule elements — mixed classes, the addition of sixth grade, guided working lunch, advisory groups — and school clubs ranging from media and game club to an after-school Academy that offers academic support. She described a new support area called "What I Need," which the students said functions as a study and homework help space.
The students also described co-curricular offerings including a gardening/cooking partnership that uses the CLC YMCA kitchen, a robust athletics program across seasons, and an educator-in-residence program that places additional staff in classrooms. Pierce Acorn, identified as student body council president, and other student council leaders summarized committee roles and said the council aims to foster inclusion and build positive peer relationships.
In closing, the student council asked that an MMS student council representative be sent to attend board meetings once a month to report back to the school. The board praised the presentation and thanked the students for their work.
The board took no formal action on the request during the meeting; the presentations were scheduled just prior to the consent agenda per an agenda adjustment announced at the start of the meeting.
