At a special meeting on Monday, Nov. 24, the Hayden City Council approved a motion authorizing a 30-day extension of its law enforcement services agreement with Kootenai County if the county offers one, and authorized the mayor to sign that extension.
An unnamed council member proposed the motion, saying, "I'd like to make a motion to accept a 30 day extension for law enforcement services contract should the county offer and authorize the mayor to sign said extension if offered." The motion received a second and drew brief clarification from council members about whether the vote covered the full contract or only the extension.
Council members stressed the distinction: the motion on the floor covered a short extension only, and the full agreement could be considered separately. An unnamed council member asked what would happen if Kootenai County did not offer the extension; the council was told staff would "be back in touch with you guys about setting a date to consider the contract." That contingency was recorded during the discussion.
The council took a roll-call vote and recorded unanimous approval. Council member Schaeffer, Council member White, Council President Rotor and Council member DePries each responded "yes," and the presiding officer announced the motion passed. The motion’s passage authorizes the mayor to execute a 30-day extension if Kootenai County offers one.
With the action concluded, a motion to adjourn was made and the council ended the special meeting. If Kootenai County does not offer an extension, council members said staff will return with a proposed date to consider the full law enforcement services contract.
