Alumni and community members asked the Bedford Board of Education on Nov. 20 whether bricks, lockers and other memorabilia from the high school slated for demolition could be made available. District staff said a small committee is cataloguing items to preserve and that salvaged items would likely be auctioned or distributed after the committee tags memorabilia.
Dr. Schneider and district staff described a walk-through process for the North House and the Career Tech Wing, noting they scheduled weekday and weekend sessions and were adding times after initial sessions filled quickly. Staff said they were keeping groups small — roughly 10 people per session — so they can run multiple groups and accommodate more stakeholders. "It's easy to add additional days," a district official said while noting constraints tied to abatement and classroom moves.
District staff emphasized logistics: abatement work will begin in February, and major moves to reconfigure South House and North House mean the district does not recommend community walk-throughs after winter break. The district also said the larger remaining portions of the main high school (South House, gymnasium and other wings) are not scheduled for demolition until 2028, giving time to identify items to save and, if the board chooses, to pass a resolution about distribution or auctions.
Why it matters: The demolition and salvage process affects alumni and community members seeking to preserve school memorabilia and has logistical implications for students and staff during the decommissioning and abatement phases.
What’s next: The district will publish specifics about memorabilia, auction processes and additional walk‑through dates; the board will decide how to handle distribution policies and whether to authorize sales or targeted donations.
