Cass County Planning Commission grants 30- and 60-day cleanup extensions, schedules reinspections

Commissioners approved 60-day extensions for multiple addresses, including 7658 West US 24 (Patrick Myers), 284 West State Road 16 and 314 West State Road (Jody Abney), 6096 West 900 North, 3365 East 800 North (Crimmins), 3714 West 500 North (with a demo permit issued Oct. 31 valid for one year), and 4004 Royal Center Pike. For several of those properties staff scheduled reinspections on Dec. 30 with the next meeting on Jan. 6. The commission explicitly discussed the use of a possible $1,000 fine as part of enforcement for properties that do not show progress.
In one case the commission granted a 30-day extension for 3775 West County Road 508 after owner Charles Spencer said the property was "pretty well cleaned up" and asked for a shorter interval. Commissioners said the 30-day option would reduce repeated appearances if the owner could finish work more quickly.
Owners and applicants who appeared told commissioners about health and scheduling constraints. Staff recommended inspections and periodic letters to the owners documenting the process and contact instructions. One resident, Isaac Lashbrook, described ongoing remodeling and said volunteers are working on the property a day each week; commissioners accepted the progress and set the standard 60-day check-in.
Votes on individual properties were made on the record; most motions passed with voice votes and seconds recorded in the minutes. Where owners were not present staff said the office will post notices on the property and proceed with the scheduled reinspection.
The commission concluded by confirming its schedule for reinspections and asking staff to send letters to property owners specifying deadlines and contact information.
