Commissioners discuss crosswalk safety near courthouse after staff request

"I'm just begging you on behalf of the employees, behalf of the correction officers who walk inmates across that crosswalk to please do something to make it more noticeable," a staff member said, describing vehicles rounding the corner and drivers failing to notice pedestrians.
Commissioners and staff discussed options including installing or relocating signs so they are visible from the approach, adding a pole with a light on the courthouse side, reducing parking near the crossing to improve sight lines and using reflective paint or glass beads when repainting crosswalk stripes. Staff said the city has previously painted stripes and will be consulted, and that the county will reach out to state contacts (Valerie Cochran was named as a state contact) to explore further options.
No immediate capital project or funding decision was made during the meeting; commissioners asked staff to follow up with the appropriate state and city contacts to identify feasible, visible improvements.
