Summary
City of Sierra Vista staff announced Winter Magic events (tree lighting Dec. 5, ice rink Dec. 5–Jan. 4 with $10 sessions, fire‑pit rentals and New Year's Eve programming) and urged public comment on the VISTA 2040 general plan executive summary through Dec. 31 ahead of a new draft next year.
Adam Curtis, representing the city of Sierra Vista, told KWCD listeners the Winter Magic tree lighting and holiday market will run Friday, Dec. 5 (4–9 p.m.) and Saturday, Dec. 6 (11 a.m.–9 p.m.), with the official tree lighting at about 5:30 p.m. on Friday followed by Santa's grand arrival on the Centennial Pavilion stage.
Curtis said the Veterans Memorial Park ice rink will operate roughly Dec. 5 through about Jan. 4; individual skating sessions are $10 for 55 minutes, fire‑pit rentals are $20 per hour, and private‑rental rates for the rink are $250 per hour for up to 25 people. He encouraged people to visit sierravistaaz.gov/winter-magic for details and to contact the sports division at (520) 515‑4999 for rentals.
Curtis also reminded residents that the city released a five‑page executive summary of the VISTA 2040 general plan and is accepting feedback through Dec. 31. He said a new draft will be released early next year and the goal is to place the plan on the November 2026 ballot; he invited residents to review the summary and take a brief survey at engage.sierravistaaz.gov.
Mayor MacKay updated listeners on Garden Avenue construction, saying paving began on the east side of Northern Garden Avenue, traffic will be one‑way northbound on the west side for about one to two months while a storm‑drain system is installed, and the overall project is not expected to be complete before March 2026. He directed residents to the city's website for project updates and contact information.
The mayor and city staff also announced a holiday trash schedule change: Thursday pickups will shift to Wednesday during Thanksgiving week and no special pickups will be available that week; Friday pickups remain unchanged. Mayor MacKay and city staff described a Dec. 19 community food distribution at Carmichael Elementary (10 a.m.–1 p.m.) in partnership with local nonprofits and the sheriff's office; organizers expect about 200 hams and food boxes to be distributed, first‑come, first‑served.
Next steps: city officials asked residents to check sierravistaaz.gov and related engagement pages for precise times, reservations and to submit VISTA 2040 feedback before Dec. 31.
