Historic Preservation: Luke Skewski of the Historic Preservation Commission read the 2026 Heritage Grant notice. The Mason County Heritage Grant Program has $16,000 available for reimbursement grants (project period six months) with awards up to $4,000 for preservation, collections management, public education, and small capital projects; applicants must submit by 12:00 p.m. Jan. 16, 2026, and can apply via masoncountywa.gov (Historic Preservation/Heritage Grant) or by mail/hand delivery to 615 West Alder St., Shelton. The grant authority referenced RCW 36.22.170.
Parks and Trails: staff announced openings on the Mason County Parks and Trails Advisory Board (seven members; goal of geographic balance among commissioner districts) and encouraged interested citizens to apply at the commissioners’ office or online; the board meets the fourth Thursday of each month at 4 p.m.
Solid waste: Kevin Gihoz, Solid Waste Manager, said Mason County will accept Christmas trees for free recycling from Dec. 26 through Jan. 10 at the Shelton Transfer Station (501 W. El's Hill Road) and the Belfair drop box (addresses provided in staff notice). Trees must be free of decorations, tinsel and flocking; wreaths and garland are not accepted. Gihoz also announced early closures for Ells Hill Transfer Station and the Belfair drop box on Dec. 18 to allow staff to hold a luncheon and all‑hands meeting; last-customer acceptance times were given in the notice.
