Mayor Lisa Brown read a city proclamation at the Native Project's Circle Room declaring November 2025 as National Native American Heritage Month, saying the month is "dedicated to celebrating the history, culture, achievements, and enduring contributions of Native peoples."
The proclamation named Spokane as being "situated upon the ancestral homelands of the Spokane Tribe of Indians" and said the city is home to "one of the nation's largest urban Native populations," representing hundreds of tribes and bands. "The Native Project is a fantastic healthcare partner for our city," Brown said during the reading.
Brown highlighted the economic presence of Indigenous entrepreneurs and organizations, saying Spokane has "over 100 Native owned businesses and organizations." She said the city is "committed to supporting efforts that promote the visibility of Native American communities' histories, educate the public on the continued injustices faced by indigenous communities, and encourage the celebration of immense cultural vitality."
The proclamation concludes with the formal language of office: "Now, therefore, I, Lisa Brown, mayor of the city of Spokane, on behalf of the people of Spokane, do hereby proclaim November 2025 as National Native American Heritage Month." No votes or actions accompanied the reading; it was presented as an official city proclamation at the event hosted at the Native Project.
