Members of the Cultural and Environmental Land Conservation Advisory Board debated the wording, appearance and funding source for a commemorative sign honoring the Hughes family before recommending a specific design to the town council.
The board noted that the council’s original resolution contains a typographical error in the family’s name as published and discussed whether the sign should read "Anne and Dan Hughes" or "Dan and Anne Hughes." Several members favored a modest, rustic plaque — with suggested sizes around 12 inches — and recommended consulting the family about preferred wording and placement. "I'm thinking maybe, like, 12, 18 inches," one member suggested during the design discussion.
Because the town will soon produce botanical wayfinding signs for new native-species plantings, one board member moved that the advisory board delay finalizing the Hughes-family sign until the botanical panels are produced so the commemorative sign can match the material and look of the new signage. The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote; the board recorded the motion as carried.
Members discussed funding options (general fund, Friends support or donations) and agreed to consult the Hughes family about wording and to return with a formal recommendation at the next meeting. The board also discussed whether any budget set-aside is needed and noted that, as the resolution currently stands, no budget line is specified.
